Modeling Sustainability Before the First Bell Rings

Happy New Year, Educators and Readers!

I hope everyone had a refreshing winter break and a wonderful restart to the year. As we step back into our routines and set new goals for our classrooms, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to truly embrace sustainability.

If you are struggling to figure out where to start this year, here is a simple idea to boost your morning routine before you even set foot in the classroom.

We often spend hours planning the “perfect” environmental lesson, but I’ve found that showing our students that we prioritize small changes to reduce waste is sometimes more impactful than the lesson itself. When students see us making those little intentional shifts, they don’t just hear the message…they want to follow suit.

Take a look at my meal prep for the week! It is as sustainable as they come.

  • Glass Mason Jar
  • Beeswax Fabric Wrap
  • Plant Based
  • All packaged in a Silicone Reusable Bag
  • Side Note: I can even compost my scraps. Vermicomposter for the win!

When I pull my lunch out of my bag in the teachers’ lounge or at my desk, it’s more than just a meal; it’s a conversation starter. It’s a real-world example for my students (and my own children!) that we have the power to shape a greener future through the choices we make every single morning.

Let’s lead by example this year. What is one small, sustainable “trail map” change you’re making in your morning routine?
